Cambodia, one of the Philippines’ main sources of rice, will host next month’s international rice conference, which is expected to draw global leaders, policymakers, and agricultural innovators.
In a statement, Cambodia’s Ministry of Commerce announced that the 17th International World Rice Conference Summit will be held at the Shangri-La in Phnom Penh from November 7 to 9. The event will be organized by The Rice Trader.
“This year, the TRT has chosen Cambodia– the world’s fifth largest rice exporting country (USDA), to provide a platform for knowledge exchange, trade facilitation, and regional cooperation in rice,” the ministry said.
The conference will highlight the Southeast Asian country’s “fast growing” rice industry, it said.
The event coincides with Cambodia’s main harvest month for its premium Phka Romdoul (Malis) rice.
The commerce ministry said this will be the “best opportunity” for rice buyers “to see first-hand how paddy is being harvested and processed.”
Last year, Manila hosted the annual event.
Data from the Philippine Bureau of Plant and Industry’s showed that as of October 9, Manila imported 3,510 metric tons of rice from Cambodia, making it the country’s seventh largest source of top s rice imports.
