The Embassy of Malaysia in Manila has opened the doors to a flavorful cultural experience with the launch of a two-week gastronomic showcase celebrating the nation’s vibrant and diverse culinary heritage.
Dubbed “Essence of Malaysia: Malaysian Food Spread,” the event kicked off on November 5 and runs until November 16 at the Circles Event Café in Makati Shangri-La.

It offers diners an authentic journey through Malaysia’s kitchens, featuring dishes crafted by two renowned chefs, Chef Edwin of Makati Shangri-La and Chef Ammar from the Malaysian Embassy.
More than just a feast for the palate, Essence of Malaysia highlights the country’s culinary artistry as part of its broader cultural diplomacy and tourism efforts under the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.
At the launch, Malaysian Ambassador Dato’ Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino said the showcase celebrates Malaysia’s spirit of unity in diversity, embodied in its cuisine.
“Food, for us, is more than just something we eat. It connects us across families, communities, and generations. Every dish you will taste tonight tells a story. A story of migration, trade, culture, and friendship. Stories that have shaped Malaysia’s identity through the centuries,” said Castelino.
Among the featured dishes are Rojak Pasembur, a salad of mixed fritters and vegetables with spicy-sweet peanut sauce; Nasi Minyak, a fragrant rice dish cooked with ghee and spices; Kerapu Asam Pedas, a tangy-spicy grouper fish stew; Mee Kari, a rich curry noodle dish with coconut milk; and Ais Kacang, a shaved ice dessert topped with colorful syrups, sweet beans, and jellies.

The Embassy said the program aims to deepen cultural understanding between Kuala Lumpur and Manila through a shared love for food and hospitality.
“It is also our way of strengthening the cultural ties and friendship between Malaysia and the Philippines, two nations that share so much in common, especially our love for food and hospitality,” Castelino added.
Through Essence of Malaysia, the Embassy said they will continue to build bridges of friendship while showcasing Malaysia’s identity as a nation of cultural harmony, creativity, and culinary excellence.
