The Philippines and Austria reaffirmed their longstanding bilateral relations during the 3rd Political Consultations held on November 24, as both countries prepare to mark the 80th anniversary of their diplomatic ties in 2026.
The Philippine delegation was led by Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Policy Leo Herrera-Lim, while the Austrian side was headed by Political Affairs Director Hannah Liko.
Both officials underscored the strength of the two countries’ partnership is anchored on political cooperation, economic exchange, and robust people-to-people links.
During the talks, the delegations discussed developments in trade, investment, innovation, renewable energy, education, culture, and labor cooperation. They noted that bilateral trade reached US$313 million in 2024, surpassing pre-pandemic levels, and acknowledged Austria’s diverse investments in Philippine economic zones.
The Philippines highlighted the contributions of the Filipino community in Austria, estimated at 6,600 individuals, many of whom work in healthcare and service sectors.
Both sides also exchanged views on regional and global developments, including the Philippines’ 2026 ASEAN Chairship, issues involving the European Union, and the security situation in the South China Sea, Ukraine, and the Middle East.
The embassy said the consultations form part of ongoing efforts by the Philippines and Austria to deepen cooperation across various sectors.
