The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) is gearing up for a spooky spectacle with its Halloween Shack Competition launching on Oct. 24, an event expected to draw tourists.
Ghoulish displays by different Strategic Business Units will haunt the former mini golf course at Waterfront Road, transforming it into a Halloween wonderland open to the public until Oct. 31.
SBMA Tourism Manager Jem Camba said the competition will showcase the “terrifying creativity” of employees across various departments, each turning their shack into unique Halloween displays.
The most creative SBU will receive P50,000 cash prize.
“Halloween traditions in Subic date back to when the area was a US naval base, with the tradition of trick-or-treating being a long-standing practice in the residential areas,” the SBMA said in a statement.
The festivities were paused during the COVID-19 pandemic but have since resumed, with new events like the annual Subic Bay Haunfest featuring costume contests, live music, and local cuisine.
The state-run SBMA manages the Subc Bay Freeport Zone, a former U.S. naval facility turned nto a tourism and investment hub. American forces pulled out from the area in 1992 after the Philippine Senate rejected a new treaty that would extend their presence in the country.
